University of Kaiserslautern (UNIKL), in Kaiserslautern, Germany consists of 10 departments offering 85 study programmes to around 12,000 students and has strong cooperation with the two top software engineering research institutes, The Fraunhofer Institute for Experimental Software Engineering and the Max Planck Institute for Software Systems. UNIKL is also part of the largest Software-clusters in Europe. Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) is supporting the software cluster projects with funds up to 40 million for 5 years. Three leading computer science research centers (DFKI, Fraunhofer, FZI), TU Darmstadt, UNIKL, the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology and the University of Saarland are bringing their expertise in the cluster. Besides, the largest German corporate software manufacturers (IDS Scheer AG, SAP AG and Software AG) are represented in the software cluster in addition to more than 350 small and medium sized companies from the corporate software sector.

Expertise
UNIKL expertise focuses into software methodologies, modelling and measurement of the oftware process and resulting products, software reuse, and distributed systems, safety critical systems, software for automotive, health medical tools and energy. UNIKL has strong cooperation with the three top software engineering research institutes, the Fraunhofer Institute for Experimental Software Engineering (Fraunhofer IESE), the Max Planck Institute for Software Systems (MPI-SWS), and the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI). Their cooperation covers basic and applied research and channel scientific contributions into the concrete and real settings of large-size companies also in non-IT specific sector. Role in the Project
UNIKL will offer a wide range of software engineering courses to the students from its already developed Masters Course curriculum which have been taught since 1975 and have undergone continuous improvements. The consortium can not only exploit the existing Master-level software engineering courses offered by UKL but also will be able to offer practical-oriented software engineering courses because of UNIKL's strong ties in teaching and research with the Fraunhofer Institute for Experimental Software Engineering (IESE) (one of the best European SE research centres). IESE will also be able to offer software engineering project and thesis for the students from practical context. Prof. Dieter Rombach, one of the coordinator of the consortium, is the Executive Director of the Fraunhofer IESE.
